Sea water, besides being a natural source of minerals and trace elements, is also a supplement worth considering in our cooking.
Some of the traditional Spanish dishes that can be prepared using sea water are:
Rice
When cooking rice or skillet dishes, it’s advisable to use 1/4 sea water and 3/4 fresh water, meaning 1 part sea water and 3 parts fresh water. This way, we will reduce the amount of salt added to the dish while also giving the rice a unique and exquisite flavor.
Broth and soup
To introduce sea water into our broths and soups, similar to cooking rice, we’ll add 1 part sea water and 3 parts fresh water. This creates a unique flavor profile and achieves the perfect combination with the rest of the ingredients.
Meat
For meat, you can place it in a bowl with sea water overnight. This method will result in tender, flavorful meat with just the right amount of saltiness.
Another use for sea water with meat is in oven-baked dishes, such as with lamb or turkey. These meat cuts will gain tenderness, juiciness, and an enhanced original flavor profile.
Fish and seafood
Fish is one of the most consumed products by Spaniards and appears in many traditional dishes in our country’s cuisine. To cook these dishes, we’ll use 1/3 saltwater.
On the other hand, for shellfish, we can cook it 100% in pure sea water.
Indeed, we can use sea water to cook any dish. Using this ingredient to replace common salt allows for reducing the amount of salt in recipes while enhancing the flavor of dishes in a healthy way.
